After letting herself into Ivy’s house, Judy walked swiftly to the kitchen counter to inspect the envelope from the Silverdale storage facility she had noticed on her last visit. Judy shivered slightly in the cool morning air that permeated the home. It seemed Glenn Dedrick wasn’t concerned with shutting off the electricity while the house wasn’t in use, but the heat was not running. Judy took a photo of the return address on the storage envelope. She planned to visit Casino Storage on Randall Way later in the day. First, she hoped to find a padlock combination or key somewhere in the extravagant house.

Judy easily searched through the cabinets, drawers, and closets as there was very little in the way of clutter in the substantial home. After scouring every room, Judy slumped onto the comfy sofa and tried to imagine what it was like to live in such a home. Judy felt reluctantly envious of Ivy’s life in Seabeck, Washington. From a young girl who was mistreated by her first love to a wealthy business owner enjoying many of the great indulgences life had to offer, Ivy seemed to have had it made. Why would she kill a man in her own living room? Judy couldn’t understand it. Ivy came across as a sensible, if not strategic, woman with nothing to gain from the murder of Mark Lucas.

“I can’t be swayed by the fact that I find Ivy interesting and likable,” Judy said to the empty room. “I’m a reporter. I publish the facts. I need to find the truth. I need to get into Ivy’s storage unit. There has to be some reason she would keep some items in a separate location when she has ample storage right here at her home.”

The envelope from the storage center was back in Judy’s hand by the time she finished convincing herself that she needed to find out the number for the unit Ivy rented. She held the letter up to the light, desperate to see through the pale white sleeve of paper. She inspected the edges, lifting a corner of the seal with her fingernail. It didn’t budge. She knew it would be wrong to open Ivy’s mail, even if no one would ever know about it. She couldn’t. She had to find another way. She tossed the letter back onto the pile of mail and turned away from the kitchen.

Before she could reach the front door, it started to open. Judy backed up slowly, swallowing hard as the door continued to swing towards her. A hint of panic rose in her throat since she didn’t expect anyone else to be letting themselves into Ivy’s old house. Glenn Dedrick stepped over the threshold followed closely by CJ Cooper.

“I told you it was that reporter’s Jeep in the drive,” CJ said.

“Oh, yes. Miss Pine,” Glenn greeted. “How nice to see you again. Diedra told me you didn’t come back for a key, so I didn’t expect to find you here.”

“Cheryl Lystad had a key,” Judy said.
